Reusable Sanitary Pads
In South Africa, it has been observed that women and girls often don't have enough money to buy female hygiene products. The adolescent girls struggling to buy female hygiene products must turn to rags, socks, even notebook paper, and often lack access to clean water and private toilet facilities. The topic of menstruation can be taboo in many cultures, including that of the different cultures in South Africa, and young girls can therefore experience shame and embarrassment when they are menstruating and do not have the resources to manage their menstruation hygienically. There is anecdotal evidence that suggests this lack of resources might result in young girls, particularly of high school age, missing school while menstruating and one study found that adolescent girls in South Africa can miss up to five days of school per month due to menstruation.
LIV Creative has decided to make a low-cost, eco-friendly sanitary pads available to girls across the country.
The LIV Village is a children’s village for orphaned and vulnerable children. Within our little village, we create jobs for the local community in Natal.
We will address the urgent need for increased access to sanitary pads (which research indicates is the preferred feminine hygiene product among schoolgirls).
We want to EMPOWER women and girls by giving them access to hygienic options during their period, so they never have to feel dehumanized, embarrassed or ashamed. We want to cut down the amount of days missed in school so they can reach their full potential by having uninterrupted access to their education. Our women and girls are future leaders, future trail blazers, future risk takers. We need to give them the tools so their futures can shine bright and beyond!
The women in the LIV community have been taught how to make reusable sanitary pads and will generate an income from this
The Sanitary pads will be donated to girls in the community, but will also be sold through the online store
